Over the last years, possibilities of excursions
in Mauritius have improved considerably; especially
in the field of active excursions. There is today a fair
choice of professionals proposing original excursions
such as dives in
submarines or on "Subscooters,"
and sports activities like Kitesurfing,
Quad
biking and Mountain
biking. Possibilities of Hiking
have also increased, often in original so-called "Eco-activities,"
such as Zip-lines,
mountain
climbing and abseiling, occurring in wonderful
settings.
The assets of Mauritius in terms of sports activities
remain nonetheless in the nautical activities,
nearly all beach hotels having at the disposal of residents
windsurfs, dinghies, pedal-boats and a power-boat
of water-skiing.
Contrarily to the land excursions, we notice a
slight slackening among the operators of nautical excursions.
It's good news in a way as it's a form of shake-out, indirectly
uplifting the quality of such excursions that, like for
day-cruising in yachts, where an over-exploitation
automatically takes part of the fun away.
The local authorities are progressively fine-tuning the
regulations concerning these activities, namely as regards
to the observation of dolphins, an over-exploited
non-ecologic activity which we do not support, except
if carried-out in Kayaks or other non-motorised crafts.
About the Regions
Typically, the East, West and North coasts are all suitable
for nautical excursions taking place inside the
lagoons and the North and West coasts are more appropriate
of nautical excursions in the open sea. The choice for
inland excursions is wider in the western part of Mauritius.
