Deer hunting in Mauritius

When Governor Van der Steel brought a couple of Rusa deer from Java Island into Mauritius in 1640, he would hardly have imagined that he was setting the stage for one of the world’s most exclusive hunting playgrounds. The deer were originally intended as food for the sailors on the ship, only fourteen survived the arduous journey to the faraway isle. The Dutch put them in a little park close to Lion Mountain on the eastern coast.

After a violent cyclone the park was completely destroyed and the deer escaped. The wild and primitive forest of Mauritius served as a willing sanctuary - its habitat being similar to Java Island. Soon, the Java Deer population exploded to over one thousand in just fifty years!
