The owner of
Les Copains d'Abord, Alain O'Reilly, is a legendary figure in Mauritian tourism. Pioneer of ecotourism, he has created, more than twenty years ago, the famous
Domain of the 7 Valleys. He is now at the head of a real group, called "
The Domain of the 7 Valleys."
Each group member takes advantage of all that can be provided by others. Thus the menu of
Les Copains d'Abord proposes deer and wild boar directly from the Domain of the 7 valleys and poultry raised on farms in the area. Palm trees (for palmhearts) and vegetables are also grown on the estate.
Fish and seafood come from the fishing group's boat and are catched by a small team of fishermen from Mahebourg. Alain O'Reilly gave them their equipment (piroque, motor, fishing equipment and safety). In return, they sell the best of their catch to the restaurant, at a preferential price renegotiated each year. An equitable formula that provides a guaranteed income for fishermen and products of exceptional quality to the restaurant!
In addition to these treasures from the sea, the menu of
Les Copains d'Abord includes some exceptional specialties out of the most ancient Mauritian traditions which Alain O'Reilly revived. One can thus enjoy a deer's tongue, a palmheart gratin with a special variety of crab "paletuvieu" or "Konokono" (a shell) and a refreshing pineapple snow pudding. More conventionally, one can also enjoy the best curries, served with a nice assortment of chutneys (chutneys in Mauritius).
It would be a shame to spend time in the South without stopping at
