Vallée de Ferney
The Ferney's forest
The Ferney Valley, a corner stone of the preservation of wildlife and endemic species in Mauritius, is one of the few habitats left for the following species, considered as threatened of extinction by the “Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature” (UICN.)

Floral Species:
Eugenia bojeri (Bois clou),
Pandanus macrostigma (Vacoas),
Olax psittacorum (Bois perroquet),
Pandanus iceryi (Vacoas),
Poupartia pubescens (Bois Poupart),
Polyscias dicroostachya (Bois d’éponge),

Faunlike Species:
The Mauritian Kestrel (Falco Punctatus) of course. Since 1987, this specie has been re-introduced in the Ferney Valley. It’s actual population now nears the thousand, all in wilderness, while there were only 3 males and 1 female left some 3 to 4 decades ago. In 1974 the Mauritian Kestrel was considered as one of the rarest birds in the world.

The Ferney Valley is also the habitat to the rarest “Mauritian Merle” (Blackbird,) the Mauritian Bat, the white-tailed “Paille-en-Queue”as well as several species of Geckos.

The planned re-introducing of other endemic bird species of Mauritius such as the Pigeon des Mares or the Grosse Câteau Verte,  into the Ferney Valley will bring the final touch to this ambitious yet exciting project.
