A
little bit of history
The first generation of Mauritius
hotels were built in the late 70's and 80's,
before the "standardisation of the product," when each
destination was unique and could not be compared with
another. Hotels
were built on the best beaches and sites of Mauritius
and from the start, were generous in terms of infrastructure
and space. The quality of service, which has always
been a key contributor to the success; was not an issue
thanks to the natural kindness of the Mauritian population.
Then came the booming 90's where tens of hotels
were built, squeezing each other along beautiful stretches
of white coral beaches. Hotels generally started
at 3-Star levels and upgraded with time, not hesitating
in hiring highly qualified management teams, housekeepers,
chefs, cooks and concierges.
There is however still no official rating by the authorities
or by any local organisation; the hotel star ratings
are thus determined by the hotels themselves, in agreement
with the International tour-operators, using benchmarks
from other holiday
resorts across the globe. |
What is the quality level of hotels
in Mauritius?
According to residents' feedbacks, from polls or from hotel
reviews online, the hotels of Mauritius remain the highlights
and focus of our visitors; mainly for there sites and the service.
Owing to the relatively high airfares to reach Mauritius (caused
by its geographical isolation,) hotels naturally tend to upgrade
in order to balance the weight of accommodation within the package
basket. The result is that Mauritius counts less 3 star hotel
resorts than 4 and five-star rated hotels…
What is the occupancy / availability
of hotel
rooms in Mauritius?
On a decade basis, the occupancy rate of hotels in Mauritius
is on a regular rise, in the neighbourhood of the 75 to 80 percent
despite the increasing number of rooms and accommodation units.
On a yearly basis, the occupancy periods are approximately as
per the graph below:
How much in advance should one book
a hotel?
It of course depends upon the period of stay. Referring to the
graph above:
• The very peak period should be booked preferably
in July in order to have a wider choice of hotels / room types
to fit one's budget.
• The peak period should be booked preferably before September.
At this stage, only the big brands have availability for that
very peak period. Availability gets very tight in October &
November.
By beg to mid December after some reshuffling, the lucky ones
can hope getting hold of a room if visiting a website at the
right moment.
• The high periods should be booked between 2
and 3 months in advance to enjoy the luxury of choice but the
luxury hotels always have some availability.
• The medium and low periods can be booked at
any time.
