With its dozen 18-hole golf courses and as many 9-holes,
Mauritius has become a golf destination. Most of them
are within hotel resorts, designed up to world championship
standards. Semi-independent Golf courses such as the Ile
aux Cerfs 18-hole course are now accessible to non-residents
and a few other courses are under construction.
Being an ancient colony of the British Empire, golf is practiced
in Mauritius since 1902 when the first Golf club
(The Gymkhana) was open by the Royal Navy members.
The Gymkhana Club being the most ancient golf
course of Mauritius may not feature all the complexities
of modern golf courses, but it is perfectly maintained. It is
surely the most affordable 18-hole course of Mauritius
as it welcomes non-members for a nominal green fee and has a
temporary membership solution. The course is a par 68 of 4,870
meters long. Lessons can be booked. Its only drawbacks remain
its situation and the weather conditions. The Gymkhana is situated
in Vacoas, roughly in the middle of the country where the rainfall
is highest; it implies a fairly long drive from any coast.
On the East Coast
Ile
aux Cerfs Golf Course is one of these wonderful and unique
courses of the world. Situated on an islet, this 18-hole
Golf course (Par 72 de 6,476 metres) was designed by Bernhard
Langer.
The Legend
Golf course is a superb 18-hole course designed by
South African champion Hugh Baiocchi. The course is a Par 72
of 6,014 meters. It is accessible solely and free of charge
to the Belle Mare Plage Hotel and the Prince Maurice
Hotel Residents.
The Links
Golf Course is the other course of the Constance Hotels
group. It is an 18-hole of Par 71 of 5,942 meters, designed
by Rodney Wright & Peter Alliss. Contrarily to the Legend,
the Links golf Course is accessible to non-residents as well.
On the South-East Coast
The Golf
Course at the Shandrani hotel is a 9 hole Par 29
of 776 meters. It is yet another course by the sea with a tee
off only at a 100 meters from the hotel reception. The course
is accessible free of charge to all residents of the Shandrani
hotel and of any other Beachcomber
hotels...
South Coast
Adjacent to the Heritage
Golf & Spa Resort and the Le Telfair Golf and Spa Resort,
the spectacular "Golf du Chateau" in Bel Ombre, is an
international 18 hole golf course (Par 72 of 6,498 metres)
designed by the South African architect Peter Matkovitch, of
Matkovich & Hayes.
On the West Coast
The Paradis
Golf Club is the one enjoying the most impressive setting
as it is situated both at the foot of the majestic Le Morne
mountain and right on the shore. This PAR 72 course of 5,899
metres has been designed by David Dutton. The course is accessible
to all residents of any Beachcomber
hotels, including the "Paradis
Hotel & Golf Club" itself and neighbour "Dinarobin
Hotel Golf & Spa"
The 18-hole Golf Course (PAR 72, 7,200 metres) of the
Tamarina Golf Estate and Beach Club is now under construction
and is due to receive its first golfers by November 2006. Situated
at the back of Flic-en-Flac, within an IRS resort, it is designed
by "Wright Golf Design" having for peculiarity 5 different Tee-offs
for each hole. It will be accessible to tourists. Beachcomber
Hotels have already stricken a deal with the Tamarina
Golf Estate and Beach Club that will allow residents of
the "Paradis
Hotel & Golf Club" and "Dinarobin
Hotel Golf & Spa" to have privileged access to the Tamarina
golf course at preferential rates. Beachcomber
Hotels have already a similar agreement with the "Golf du
Chateau."
On the North Coast
The golf course at the Maritim Hotel is a Par 29, 9
hole course designed by Graham Marsh. Green fee is free
of charge, to the Maritim Hotel residents. Golf lessons are
available.
