Hiking:
The best region of
Mauritius for free
hiking
is the west, due to the "Black River Gorges" National
park from which several short and long hikes are possible
and easily accessible.
There
are however, plenty of wonderful tracks that are
entirely or partly within private properties; either
commercially open for guided hikes (such as the
Yemen Park
and the
Domaine
de L'Etoile) or giving access to one specific
accredited and licensed
excursionists, like
Yemaya Adventures
and
Yanature,
having exclusivity on these premises.
The sugar estate of St Felix, which has conserved
some parts of its domain on each side of "Riviere
des Galets" proposes an original way of hiking in
nature using
zip-lines,
some at tree-top heights, running across the river.
Another way to hike is to stay at lodges like
in
L'Exil
or Guesthouses like "
La
Vieille Cheminee" specifically set for the carrying
out of hikes, within privately owned domains.
Abseiling and Mountain Climbing
This is a discipline newly developed in Mauritius,
with, among others, "
Alisios"
which set several zip-lines and climbing installations
on many of the most beautiful mountains and peaks
of Mauritius. These hiking excursions are carried
out with qualified guides.
